The Answer to Your Pain
What is Bowenwork?
Bowenwork is a neuromuscular and connective tissue modality that affects the structure, nerves, muscles, joints, fluids, chemicals and energy of the body. It originated with Tom Bowen in Australia over 40 years ago where he treated over 13,000 people a year with an 80% success rate. It is currently being used by over 21,000 therapists in 31 countries.
What does it feel like?
Bowenwork uses procedures with specific sequences of short, gentle rolling motions of the thumbs or fingers over precise locations on the body. Each series of 2 to 8 movements is followed by “quiet working periods” of 2 minutes or more that allow the brain, body, and mind to integrate each stage of the work. A deep sense of relaxation accompanies the process. There are many procedures that illicit immediate responses and release of pain and restrictions. The real work takes place over the next 5 or more days with sensations that are unique to your individual body.
Who should consider Bowenwork?
As a modality Bowen has cut its teeth on chronic problems that could not be resolved by any other medical or alternative means and helps deal with symptoms of even incurable diseases. It is even more effective with acute injuries, has amazing preventative qualities, and is proving itself as a superior modality in many sports environments. Women benefit greatly during and after pregnancy and in all phases of life cycles.
What happens after a session?
The process of your body recalibrating itself has begun and will play out in many possible fashions over the next 5-10 days. It is very dependent upon each individuals internal issues. There may be a day or 2 of uneasiness as old problems fall away and correct patterns of use come back into play. Some people experience enhanced dream states, emotional states or temperature variables. Occasionally there is transitory pain in areas that you thought were not involved with your problem. These may be the actual root cause or be compensations that are anchoring the main issue from full resolution. On the next session these areas would be addressed thus unraveling the web of compensations that is typical of chronic conditions. By about the 3rd day as fascia is rehydrated ( drinking water is essential to the process) and alignments (structural, muscular, nervous, chemical etc.) take place, pain dissipates and a general feeling of well being ensues.
Plan an hour and 15 minutes for a first session and 40 minutes to an hour for future work. Pregnant women and children under 16 are ½ that time and ½ price.
That will depend on your goals, but Bowenwork is typically effective within 2 to 5 sessions and must be spaced 5-10 days apart.
Why is Bowenwork more economical than other therapies?
Due to its emphasis on results Bowenwork helps you return to and sustain optimal levels of health faster, easier, and with fewer sessions, leading to a savings of time and money.
Bowenwork is distinguished by its effectiveness over a very short number of sessions. It does not hurt and can bring permanent relief rapidly. The client is comfortably clothed and no oil is used. It activates the body rather than trying to direct it physically or energetically as other therapies do. Changes are made by your body at the source of the problem, so the effects are integrated and the results last. If the cause is not treated the symptoms return again and again
Bowenwork stimulates your innate healing capacity and triggers your body’s intelligence to initiate and speed up self-repair. It signals your body to restore structural integrity, repair and relieve musculo-skeletal pain, improve nervous and endocrine system function, facilitate better blood and lymph flow and enhance your overall health physically and emotionally. With some procedures simple movements are given to advance the process.
Avoid impact to the body such as massage, chiropractic, physical therapy, acupuncture, and magnets for 4 –5 days before a Bowenwork session. The same applies for 5 days after as well, and includes avoiding hot water and ice, walking more, and drinking plenty of water. The only restriction to exercise programs is to not push beyond your normal routine while the body is processing.
Bowenwork has been successful in addressing problems relating to these and other conditions. What follows is the intake form used at Bowen Therapy. It is a checklist that builds a case for which procedures will be used to affect the most profound results. Bring it with you on your first visit.
Check the Item(s) that are current issues. Circle ones that are resolved but where significant. Then pick a few priorities. Line 120 is for things not listed.
As always consultations are free. Please reference the Health Intake form which was included in this article.
