Seniors prefer Bowen

Over 70% of my clients are at least 55 years young with many in the 70-plus category.  Q. Why are so many seniors attracted to Bowen? A. Because it is so effective and user friendly that it is a perfect fit and satisfied clients are telling their friends.

You might expect seniors to be the toughest sector to work with and in which to get results. They have had a lifetime of cumulative wear-and-tear and long-term postural compensations around painful joints. In addition, they can be more resistant when it comes to any restrictions or assigned exercises. Finally, they may be legitimately concerned that the process will be painful without making the quality of there lives any better. I will address each of these concerns.

When you take away the contributing factors and relieve the symptoms then the wear-and-tear isn’t as bad as many people think. For example -- the knees:  when the weight is going through them at the correct angle they work pretty well.  But if there is a hip alignment issue that affects the entire lower body it can cause aggravation to arthritis and make for a painful and unstable knee. Therefore Bowen addresses the hips with a simple procedure as well as a set of moves that relieves swelling and pain in the knees themselves.

Long-term postural compensations for painful joints is a technical way of saying that when you walk or move poorly because something hurts, then other things start to hurt. This is a maze of cause and effect that only your brain really knows how to navigate. Your brain put it there so it knows how to remove it. Bowen moves send information to your brain asking it to reevaluate and reset the body.  Bowen testimonial files are filled with cases of the body simply going back to proper painless, functioning 20 to 30 years or more after injuries, especially in those areas that were not even injured in the first place.

Regarding the issue of restrictions, after a Bowen session you are asked to drink water, walk a little more, and avoid extremes in water temperature. This is pretty simple stuff compared to the side effects that come along with the drug options to control pain, swelling, migraines, etc. With the over 100 procedures that I work with as a Master Bowen Practitioner there are only a few which include a set of easy movements that enhance the work and are done once a day to clean up a shoulder, keep the hips aligned, or improve shallow breathing.

Bowen sessions are soothing, gentle and subtle; there is no “if it doesn’t fit use a bigger hammer” approach.  That mind set gets played out all too often with conventional medical approaches. It is similar to the no-pain-no-gain myth.  Bowen does not add more drugs, poke deeper, turn up the electricity or make bone jolting adjustments to spines that are most likely compromised with some arthritis or disc degeneration. Bowen is based on “less is more”. Treat the body with respect, ask it politely, and give it time to process each set of moves before rushing ahead and good things will happen. It takes a mature individual to appreciate that many of the best and most dramatic things that happened in the course of a lifetime came from subtle beginnings.

What I love about working with seniors is that they have been around long enough to realize that life isn’t about running through walls and being indestructible anymore but rather finding doorways. Seniors have healed many times in their lifetime. When I sit and talk with my senior clients about activating that healing response that has come to their aid over and over again there is an almost palpable recognition of that power that is within them -- a recognition that ignites an anxious sense of hope that they can live without pain, with more energy and freedom of movement.

Q. What can Bowen work on? A. Anything that your amazing body can heal.
